Errandonnee 2015

I know our “winter” here is very different from winter in DC, but hey, the Errandonnee Challenge is open to all! Judging by everyone else’s photos and entries so far, the errandonnee is a great way to herald the coming of spring. Here’s my write-up from this year’s challenge. This isn’t so much a “challenge” as a pleasant way to work more utilitarian riding into your week while connecting with bike-minded people all over the country (and the world?). Ride your bike to complete at least 12 errands in 12 days. Simple, right?

Onto my entry for 2015.

Took an extended lunch break to ride 5.9 miles to the bike shop. Had to get my derailleur tuned up after an unsuccessful (but not horrendous) attempt to fix it myself. Bikes seem to take a beating when transported often in a trailer alongside many other bikes.

Rode 5.2 miles to Goleta Beach for our cycling team photos. Hang out by the beach, realize just how many people have on the team – including many more women who joined this year!

Did a Saturday century ride (101.6 miles) with a friend from the cycling team. We wanted to explore further afield on bikes. It was my first time up Casitas Pass, which was a nice climb. Sampled donuts, joked about street names, and refueled after the big 100 with copious quantities of Thai food. But man, it was a hot day – over 90degF at the top of Casitas – and at our lunch stop (55-mile mark) I had been ready to throw in the towel because of the heat. Pressed on, though, and this turned out to be my most pleasant century yet, ending on a high note with only a bit of soreness. My cycling endurance and my on-ride nutrition is getting better!… says the person who has been keeping the local donut purveyors in business.

Rode to meet my friend for gym day. She’s getting ready to take her PhD written exams, so we chatted a bit about that. Pretty foggy this morning, but happy that all soreness from Saturday’s century has dissipated. Evening ride back was chilly (by California standards) and quite peaceful. Ride to gym plus the rest of my commute equaled 4.2 miles.

Added some miles to my ride in today! (13.9 miles instead of usual sub-2 miles.) And a bonus coffeeneuring stop at a nice cafe ‘on the way.’ Even though I do my short commute by bike daily, I learned that a longer morning ride helps my work productivity, even if I’m a little sweatier when I get into the office.

Good solo gym session, then a check-up at the health center before heading into the office. Learned that after a few months of (fairly) consistently working out in the gym, you start to recognize most of the people there. And if you weren’t aware, Daylight Savings Time is not observed by sundials. Rode 3.5 miles on a very summery day.

Cafe work session with Adam, then grabbed some lunch and stopped into the ReStore so he could try to locate some work-related stuff. Hot, hot day – honestly glad I didn’t try to go on a longer ride. Discovered that riding with my backpack makes a bunny sweat pattern. 13.5 miles recorded.

Snuck the last couple errands in just under the cutoff. Rode to the ATM for cash money, then hit up the nearby donut shop. I’ve been all about the donuts lately, so I biked some donuts into the office to share with the early-risers. Generally that’s the staff, some of the faculty, and only a handful of the grad students. Distance something like 2.4 miles for this one.

And that’s a wrap for now!

  1. Way to go Crystal! Especially the Century over Casitas Pass on a hot day. Was that Java Station in the picture.

  2. Good eye, Steve – indeed Java Station! Casitas Pass was a fun ride, will definitely ride up there again soon.
